Securing your digital environment |
As more and more Internet Protocol (IP) addressable devices – products in your home that connect to your home’s local area network (LAN) and to the Internet – come to market and are being installed and integrated into the home environment by Electronic Systems Contractors (ESC), the more attention needs to be paid to the basic functionality of these systems and, of course, to the overall security risks that are inherent in the system.
The parallels of cyber security for residential customers mirrors the evolution of advanced digital networks in the government, universities and large business enterprises and the evolution of the residential digital networks that many consumers have had integrated over the past decade. Cyber criminals and insider threats are going to be as common in the home as they are in businesses and the government. These IP devices offer great benefits, but also provide a means to enter the network – but with basic network security strategies and our Home Cyber Shield system, you will be deploying the most advanced network security that any home on the planet enjoys.
There is a general risk to home area networks by automated software programs that go out over the Internet – common hacking tools – that seek entry into your house by beating basic firewalls and basic password schemes. Additionally, the insider threat – those who have been granted permissible access into the network and know your IP addresses and username/passwords – cannot be minimized, as the data for 2009 reflects the fact that 60% of enterprise level commercial data theft had an insider component associated with the breach in security.
Finally, it is important to ensure that all of the benefits of these IP devices are enjoyed by the home owner, with minimal downtime. While it is important from a security standpoint to be able to identify system failures – IP surveillance cameras, lighting systems, alarm systems, etc. – and to correct those remotely if possible, it is also common sense to create a process where the ESC can actively monitor your entire array of IP devices, including cable modems, IP phones, automation systems, and other appliances to resolve common lock-up issues before they impact your family and your daily life. There is nothing more frustrating than to invest in an elaborate home network and have a simple cable modem lock-up shut the entire system down.
